Most tidying methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method® encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.
People around the world have been drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking.
I believe Marie Kondo became so popular because she has a simple, powerful message that runs counterculture to everything we hear. In our consumer culture, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements, messages to consume, and feelings of inadequacy. In a world that has told us for so long that we need more, bigger, better, Marie Kondo and her method offer an antidote: that less truly is more.
The amount of time it takes to complete the method depends on the size of your home, the amount of your belongings, and your readiness to make decisions about what to keep and what to let go. It takes a full commitment and a good amount of time to go through the method, but the results are incredible. This is an extremely comprehensive method and you will start to see (and feel) results immediately. And as Marie Kondo says, if you do it right, it is a one time affair - a full tidying fiesta will allow you to be done, once and for all.
Seeing the incredible benefits she felt not only in her home but in her life, Jenna started The Joy Filter to help others struggling with overwhelm, confusion and dissatisfaction to complete the KonMari Method® and apply a filter of joy to their home, business and life. Jenna Carlsson is a Certified KonMari Consultant who will help you use the KonMari Method® to find your way back to living your most joyful life!
The Joy Filter company is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and serves the East Bay, San Francisco, and the North Bay including San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Sonoma and Solano Counties. Travel to other areas is also possible for week-long Tidying Intensives.

We strongly recommend reading the short and easy read, Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, prior to Tidying Sessions which will help you to feel prepared and excited for the first tidying session. Marie Kondo also wrote Spark Joy as a complement volume to her first book - it goes through more specifics of implementing the process. If you have not read the book but are still ready to move forward, do not worry! We’ll guide you step by step to implement the KonMari Method® in your home.
Another great and fun resource to watch and prepare for tidying is the Netflix Show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, released January 1, 2019, which will definitely get you in the mood to tidy, let go, and move forward! Although neither the book nor the Netflix show are required before our KonMari tidying fiestas, either will help you better understand the method and the steps we’ll take to help you implement the KonMari Method® in our sessions.
